FR Review:
This is the place to go for the all-time classic wedding. Or for the perfect thank you notes after. In business since 1929, Mrs. Strong knows just how to hit the right mark. Be that your coat of arms, a rendering of your house or a Florentine embellished engraving of your initials. Never overdone, proprietary white "Strong's vanilla" cotton paper is featured. Understated, yet becoming ink colors, hand-beveling and bordering, and tissue envelope lining distinguish the look. Importantly, they only employ hand-engraved dyes-- no machine engraved plates or thermography is ever considered.
Flora Strong began the business as an adjunct to her sister's elite trousseau shop, Bournefield Linens, which was located on the current Tiffany corner of 57th Street and Fifth Avenue. Clients have included the Duke and Duchess of Windsor (the Duchess's royal blue crest is on display in the showroom), the Rockefellers, Astors, Vanderbilts, and seven presidential families. More recent clients include Oprah Winfrey, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, Anna Wintour and Bruce Springstein. The company was saved from the brink of bankruptcy in 2009 by Jacqueline Kotts, a New Orleans investor and devotee. Kotts knows this market and knows how to run a business, being both a former debutante and a recent MBA. A classic New York story: After working at a law firm and before business school, Kotts was a summer intern at Strong's, receiving stationery as compensation.
Clearly expensive but in-line with other hand-crafted stationers, a box of 20 pre-packaged notes runs about $100 and custom designs can start at $750 for 100 pieces. This would include an engraved name dye, cards and lined envelopes. The timing is about 6-8 weeks depending upon the specific design, as the different styles are chiseled by distinct master craftsmen. Wedding invitations are considerably more. While an investment, these papers are the most elegant available and clearly distinguish themselves from the pack.
Representative Client Comments:
"Thank goodness they have been saved. The minute I heard that they were still in business I ran to the atelier with my dyes for reprints. The designs look as fresh now as they did 15 years ago." "The first thing I did when I became engaged (after calling home) was to order stationery with my new name in Mrs. Strong's Kitt's dye. It officially commemorated the occasion." "There simply is no comparison to all the others that may make their own dyes but print on Crane's watermarked paper. Mrs. Strong is the real deal."
