FR Review:
A leading custom framing company, Bark Frameworks is known for its versatility: clients marvel at the range of options. Located in a massive facility in Long Island City, the firm has the space and specialized workforce to go far beyond the capabilities of the average framer: it has millwork and metalwork shops, in-house gilding specialists and equipment to test UV protection. For their expertise and depth of research, Bark is frequently called on by top-tier museums, galleries and artists. Individual clients benefit, too–they can purchase frames originally designed for a Hopper at the Whitney, or a photo exhibit at the Met. Interior designers appreciate that Bark can “do whatever I ask for, their capabilities are stunning.” They also appreciate the fact that the firm has a thorough process for ensuring the preservation of beloved pieces, including pre-framing condition reports that are kept on file for years.
Founded in 1969 by Jed Bark, the company began as a one-man shop, primarily a means to support Bark’s art career. An early focus on the artist’s perspective continues to this day, as Bark always prefers to “start with the art,” doing historical research whenever possible to frame with the creator’s intent in mind (their work on Degas and van Gogh’s framing preferences has been published in scholarly journals). Of course, that isn’t possible in all cases, so for clients bringing in a print or a beloved landscape by an unknown, Bark’s designers—many of whom are artists themselves—will suggest a profile or explore a wealth of custom options.
Bark can generally turn a project around in two to four weeks, though if extensive gilding or millwork is required, that number goes up. Prices are in the upper tier, commensurate with the firm’s experience, but by no means the highest. The company’s focus is from “Impressionism to the present day”—those in search of an ornate Rococo original should look elsewhere. For everything else, Bark receives top praise from top sources. Said one designer we spoke with, “I’ve stopped using anyone else.”
Representative Client Comments:
“They really know their business in and out—head and shoulders above the competition on knowledge.” “A breathtaking range of options.” “It’s my new favorite reason to go to Long Island City.” “They did a lot of work on the big Whitney re-open in the meatpacking district.” “I feel completely safe giving them anything to work on.”
