FR Review:
Abhaya Yoga is the only studio in Brooklyn focused solely on the fast-growing Anusara method, emphasizing the "opening of the heart" and application of the "Universal Principal of Alignment." In layman's terms, this means classes that are very mindful of the spine and physically intense without being fast paced. The 90-minute classes begin with the Anusara Incantation chant and the aim is for students to walk away with a spiritual lesson as well as a physical one. The young studio opened in just 2010, but the community aspect is already strong: members love the "warm atmosphere" and "careful instruction." It also doesn't hurt that instructors make a valiant effort to "learn everyone's name and background."
Abhaya is the realized dream of Tara Glazier, a former dancer who has been practicing yoga for over ten years and received her Anusara Certification in 2008. She decided to open her own studio when she "accidentally stumbled upon" the perfect spot--a sun-drenched space in DUMBO with stunning views of the Brooklyn Bridge. Glazier is joined by more than a dozen part-time instructors and the Bhava Friday nights are especially popular, which take place around sunset and are accompanied by live music. Prices are very reasonable: unlimited monthly membership starts at $125, with drop-in classes costing just $18. Overall, Abhaya is a great option for those looking to become a part of a warm yoga community and don't mind the trek to DUMBO.
