Company Philosophy
The Metropolitan Gardener works closely with clients to design gardens that reflect their vision while also considering the needs and possibilities of the existing site. We look for the unique aspect of every garden, choose appropriate plantings and work with a select group of craftsman to create beautiful healthy gardens. All gardens need to be maintained and we are committed to providing on-going care for each our gardens with enthusiastic and experienced staff.
 
Areas of Expertise / Recent Projects

Brownstone Back Garden

While located in a charming back courtyard of brownstone gardens this particular garden offered several challenges:

  • The garden is located on a roof extension (everything would need to grow in containers)
  • The interior dining and kitchen windows look directly out into the garden so the garden should be interesting even in winter
  • The garden receives little direct sunlight so our plant choices would be limited
  • Next door a restaurant had large AC units at eye level with the garden

Our solution encompassed :

  • Building elegant custom planters that corresponded with the interior kitchen cabinets. This provided a visual link between the interior and exterior spaces
  • Planting a variety a shade tolerant evergreens offers winter interest and by combining them with perennials we add color and texture throughout the growing season
  • A lattice fence was built to screen the view of the AC units while still allowing light and air flow through the garden
  • Vines are planted to begin greening the garden vertically
