Company Philosophy
We provide highly personalized services for a wide range of select residential, commercial, landscape, and interiors projects. Our goals:

  • Create architecture for and about the people who use it.
  • Listen carefully and respond appropriately.
  • Accept -- and exploit -- context where called for.
  • Strive for originality, but not just to be original.
  • Avoid dogma, jargon, momentary style, and imitating the past.
  • Value aesthetics.
  • Embrace detail both in design and in the process.
  • Learn from one project to the next.
  • Have fun.

As the firm's reputation has grown, clients look to BENJAMIN CLAVAN, ARCHITECT, AIA not only for creative design solutions, but also to resolve atypical or intricate design and entitlement problems outside the normal practice of many other architects.

We enjoy challenges. And we like the idea that the finished product will reflect not only architectural excellence, but also the crucial "bottom-line" realities for every client.

Areas of Expertise / Recent Projects
Under Construction: A third residential project in Valencia, Spain: Reforma (renovation) of a modern, floor-through piso (flat) to correct the mistakes of a builder’s intervention, including a new Entry Hall, privatizing the Bedroom wing, creating a Master Bedroom suite with a new Bath, re-finishing a second Bath, adding an interior glass wall, and selecting new fixtures and finishes. This follows close-on with a dramatic modernization of another piso residence in a historic building in the ciudad vieja (old city), including creation of a generous Salon, new contemporary Kitchen and Bath, and interiors assembled from Spanish furnishing sources.

Recently Completed: Plans for the renovation of a fifth residence for a repeat client on the water in Malibu, CA. Our fourth residence for this client, for whom we have also completed four loft and high-rise office suites/floors. This new home is a completely renovated and furnished three-story condominium on the sand in Marina Del Rey, CA. A minimalist composition based on an improved floor plan that includes a relocated stairway, new kitchen, new master bedroom suite, new fireplaces, and an opening glass wall to a private terrace. (The client must like our work: We have also completed four different loft and high-rise office suites/floors for the client’s firm.)

Completed: A FRANKLIN REPORT referral, of course! Transformation of a 3450 sq. ft. overall 1960s single-story ranch home into a contemporary two-story plus roof terrace, 6450 sq. ft. villa, including extensive landscaping and hillside infinity pool. Project maneuvered through two years of regulatory complexity in the Hollywood hills of Los Angeles.

Completed: Another FRANKLIN REPORT referral. Complete remodel of traditional small, early 20the century Spanish Colonial-revival style home with new pool and cabana in the Fairfax district of Los Angeles. Designed to maximize the use of the existing footprint of the residence and to retain the charm of the existing structure.

Completed: Los Angeles west coast headquarters for Scripps Networks, parent of HGTV, the FOOD Channel, DIY Channel, and Fine Living. New, full-floor offices that combine the comforts and sophistication of a custom-designed residence (including an exterior garden meeting room), with the technical requirements of this cable communications giant.
