Company Philosophy
Established by Marc Appleton in 1976, Appleton & Associates, Inc. has offices in Santa Monica and Santa Barbara, California. Design is a collaborative process with our clients, inspired by and responsive to their specific desires, needs, program and budget. Our work, which includes both architecture and landscaping, frequently draws upon the time-honored traditions of vernacular architecture, subtly reinterpreting them to evoke a presence of the past. We are committed to the idea that architecture is a craft rather than an art, a process rather than an object. We agree with William Wurster’s view that architecture is for people; "the picture frame, and not the picture".
 
Areas of Expertise / Recent Projects
We specialize in the planning and design of custom residential, boutique hotel, institutional and commercial projects for both private and public clients. Our projects include additions, restorations and the adaptive reuse of existing buildings as well as new construction. We have been extensively published in major design periodicals, including Architectural Digest’s AD 100 from 1991 to 2014 and have won numerous awards and competitions.
