FR Review:
Many designers mix old and new, few do it as charmingly as Jennifer Vaughn Miller. Her work is a particularly lovely union of past and present–a vintage monogrammed steam trunk sits naturally next to a plush modern sofa, while elsewhere a dab of neon illuminates a farmhouse floor. Schooled as an architect, Vaughn Miller always considers the envelope–Madison Avenue calls for a different kind of polish than Amagansett–but in any setting her work conveys elegance in a relaxed, modern way. In general, Vaughn Miller works within a neutral palette, preferring to make her point with shape, light and material rather than floral chintzes or brights. The look however is never too serious. Rather, it’s full of whimsical details.

A Texas native, Vaughn Miller was raised in Houston and studied architecture at UT Austin before moving to New York. She worked for Laura Bohn initially, then designed at Tsao & McKown before starting her own firm in 2009. Professional references tell us Miller’s architectural know-how is a boon to clients, and that she’s a helpful pair of eyes to have on a blueprint. Clients themselves tend to love the design and the designer equally, saying Miller is a “a blast” to work with, very “upbeat and hands-on," and someone who will “work like crazy” to meet a deadline. Indeed, this is a professional who goes "above and beyond" for clients, whether that’s creating a personal crest or helping choose the color for a new jeep (silvery gray, by the way, with a camel interior).

Working out of a Midtown office with an assistant, Miller takes on a small handful of projects at a time. Her work is split roughly evenly between Manhattan and Long Island, with occasionally trips back to Texas for the right project. Miller charges a standard design fee and markup on product–architectural work (built-ins, etc.) are priced hourly. Clients appreciate a straightforward system and a “practical,” “honest and real” approach to budgeting. Overall, they hail Miller as a talented designer and a great companion for the process.

Representative Client Comments:
“If I had known how skilled an architect she was, I would have asked her to do the whole project.” “A perfect mix of New York and Texas.” “She has kids too, so she understood what I meant when I asked for something indestructible.” “She took great care to understand us and what we were looking for.” “She’s great at blending vintage finds in with contemporary furniture. That’s her magic touch.” “I miss her!” “Jennifer definitely has a vision, but she’s also a great listener." “She doesn’t settle for ‘just good enough.’” “I loved the presentation–she had everything installed at once, so when we opened the door and saw the apartment finished it was all laid out for us. I almost fainted! It was so beautiful.”
