Amanda Sanders of New York Image Consultants promises that clients will leave her hands looking 10 years younger and 10 pounds thinner, and the clients we spoke with affirm the regenerative effects of her work. "My sessions with Amanda have been life altering," said one. "I feel and look much younger," said another. Sanders' clientele is considerably diverse: a 50/50 split between men and women, a wide range of ages and a sizable number of out-of-towners coming to Manhattan specifically for wardrobe help. Sanders is known for her assertive nature and sharp eye, but she is also fun to be around--"like shopping with a lifelong friend."
New York Image Consultants opened its doors in 1999 as the creation of owner Elena Castaneda. Castaneda spends much of her time touring as an image training expert, with Sanders handling the majority of the day-to-day business. Sanders has some assistance, but when you go to New York Image Consultants you are getting Amanda's time and eye--not an associate's. Sanders has a masters in costume design and started off as a celebrity stylist, having dressed the likes of Chris Rock, Colin Quinn and Gwyneth Paltrow. After a time, she realized that she would rather style non-celebrities and joined New York Image Consultants in 2004 to do just that.
Shopping sessions typically take place in Saks, Bloomingdales or Bergdorf Goodman, where Sanders has all clothing and accessories pulled ahead of time and expertly arranged in the client's personal fitting room. Sanders' hourly fee of $250 (with a three hour minimum) is among the highest, though clients say it's a good value and that Sanders is considerate of a client's budget. A born and bred New Yorker, Sanders knows where to send clients for hairstyling, makeup, tailoring and other services to complete the look. Sanders comes highly recommended for both men and women of varied ages, but seems especially adept at helping clients reach a stylish, in-the-moment look.
