FR Review:
Maria-Helena Hoksch is preserving the dying art of calligraphy, one invitation at a time. Working out of her New Orleans studio, Hoksch mixes her own ink, puts quill to hefty paper and yields lavish lettering similar to what would have been produced hundreds of years ago. Nothing is done on computer and nothing is delegated to others. Her classical, fluid style is popular among brides-to-be in search of an invitation that will stand out and evoke a "classic" and "nostalgic" feeling. Hoksch's clientele could aptly be classified as high society, but her services are an affordable luxury for those who place considerable importance on sending invitations that will exhilarate guests as soon as they open their mailbox. Clients enjoy the collaboration process with Hoksch and appreciate her "innate style sense" and how on top of the ball she is--rarely does she miss the mark in pinpointing the exact vibe the client is going for.

Hoksch knew that she wanted to be a calligrapher from the tender age of 13. She began studying calligraphy extensively in high school and college in her native country of Estonia. It was there that she met her husband, an American, who transplanted his new wife to New Orleans, where she blossomed in the area's solid wedding industry. Phone consultations and an online portfolio allow Hoksch to work with clients outside of NOLA, especially in New York, Texas and Florida. Naturally, she also takes on non-wedding projects, including menus, place settings and monograms. Hoksch's prices are surprisingly reasonable given the ornate delicacy of her work (not having to pay NYC rent certainly helps keep costs down). An invitation design starts at $500 and includes enclosures, which is a good deal if your printer will be making several hundred invitations based off of it. Envelope addressing, meanwhile, starts at $1.10 a line.

Representative Client Comments:
"She did my wedding invitation and envelopes--absolutely stunning." "Maria-Helena is charming--her work is charming, her manner is charming--even her accent is charming."
