FR Review:
Artbag is the handbag repair shop to call when you require nothing short of perfection--and are prepared to pay for it. The UES shop is considered the authority on leather and vintage handbag repair, and is particularly renowned for its ability to match colors and properly restore alligator and lizard--something few repair shops can claim these days. Owner Chris Moore states that the majority of repairs are bag handles, which are always the first to go, but they also see a lot of tear patching and zipper replacement. Artbag will take on just about any problem you can throw at them, and their complimentary quotes are strictly adhered to. The turnaround time is long, at about three weeks, given the queue and intense focus placed on each bag.

Artbag first opened its doors in 1932 and currently resides on Madison Ave & 84th. The clientele consists of mostly Upper East Siders and other Manhattanites, but their growing internet presence has resulted in a boom of international clients in need of Artbag's specialization (they recently repaired a Lanvin bag for a customer in Switzerland). Artbag also gets contract work from Bergdorf, Valentino and Tiffany's, among others. Customers note that prices are indeed expensive, but that the quality is "unparalleled." Repairing a worse-for-the-wear vintage bag is likely to cost several hundred dollars, and into the thousands if it's vintage alligator, which is extremely difficult to match. Modern bags are more reasonably priced: restoring a medium-sized leather bag starts at $95; handle replacement at $150. Artbag also sells high-end, customized handbags manufactured in Italy.

Representative Client Comments:
"The only place to take family heirlooms and really high-end designer bags." "Not cheap, but really high quality." "A New York institution--no one does it like them any more." "The turnaround time is extensive, but that's because they're so specialized." "Chris is so knowledgeable, and really easy to work with." "One of the best-kept secrets in customized bags. I had several alligator skin bags custom made for my wife, which are stunning and cost so much less than what you'd pay retail."

Project Description & Comments:
I have some very old alligator bags I take here for maintenance every so often. They do a great job of repairing the handles and re-gluing backing. Refinishing older items is very expensive, but Artbag offers the highest quality. They sell expensive handbags too.

Project Description & Comments:
Several of my most treasured bags have found their way to Artbag...from a beautiful quilted leather Chanel bag requiring zipper and leather replacement, to a pebbled leather aqua Michael Kors handbag, and soon two Lamarthe vintage bags. As I've shared with Mr. Moore, I cannot say enough wonderful things about the care and attention he provides to the little treasures we send his way for special care and attention. The delicate transformation he is able to work on them to resurrect them back to their original beauty is nothing short of extraordinary. I had heard a credible celebrity mention the little miracles he is able to work on handbags, and have since written to her to thank her for the recommendation.
