Maxsim is an intimate skin spa recognized for removing blemishes and hair with hands of precision and delicacy. A private, pristine, and quiet space, it's rare that you'll run into anyone but the receptionist and your aesthetician (either the owner Lena or her sister Olya) during your visit. The experience is made as relaxing as possible and wait time is near nonexistent. Should you arrive early, a complimentary glass of wine is a great way to prep for a Brazilian. All-natural lavender hard wax and liquid zinc wax are used to minimize pain and supposedly promote slower hair growth. The treatment is far from pain free, but is more bearable than traditional waxing. Regulars claim "Maxsim is always worth going out of the way for," and "They offer the least painful wax out there."
Lena Makushina, former aesthetician at Susan Seminelli and Bliss, founded Maxsim in 2000 with the intent to provide a more personal experience for skin care clients. After a treatment with her (and a glimpse of her glowing, flawless skin) it is clear that she is a master in her field. In addition to hair removal, Maxsim offers a variety of unique skin treatments such as facials, enzyme skin peels, seaweed body wraps, and many types of massage. For clients interested in preventing further skin irritations and breakouts, nutritional counseling is available. Prices are standard. A Brazilian is about $70; Facials run $80 - $150 and massage is $100 for the hour. Appointments are best made in advance. However, regulars can almost always be fit in for an emergency wax. One client notes how: "both Lena and Olya have stayed late to accommodate a last minute waxing." Despite the pain factor, the experience is overall pleasurable. Maybe it’s the zen ambiance or the glow that radiates from the staff, somehow you can't help leave Maxsim feeling cleaner and happier than you entered.
