FR Review:
In a city where square footage is like gold, it’s difficult to find a design firm that is not only willing to work on small projects, but also excels at it. Elemental Interiors is just that firm. With their clean and organic style, they look at the space holistically and consider how the client uses it. Modern lines and the contrast of light and dark colors give their designs a tranquil and open feel.

Partners Sarah Barrett and Megan Downing met at Thom Filicia’s firm where they were both design directors. Both have Bachelors of Interior Design, Barrett from the Art Institute of Chicago and Downing from FIT. Between the two of them, they have eleven years of professional interior design experience. In 2009, Barrett and Downing left Thom Filicia to form Elemental Interiors. The firm consists of the two principals and a bookkeeper. The partners split the business down the middle but Downing admits that her talents lie with sourcing furniture, while Barrett is an AutoCAD wiz.

Elemental Interiors has done residential projects in the West Village, East Village, Upper West Side, Upper East Side, Tribeca, Financial District, Brooklyn, Fairfield and Greenwich. Barrett and Downing also do a fair amount of hospitality work, notably Jean George in Washington DC and the W Hotels in New Orleans, DC and Union Square. Half of their projects are renovations and half are guts. About 25% of the time they get involved with architectural elements, but are very comfortable with smaller projects such as a single kitchen and bath or a studio apartment. Clients report that Barrett is as good as a professional organizer in dealing with clutter. Elemental Interiors is very affordable and charges a low to average design fee and a low to average hourly. An added bonus is they don’t charge markups over net and therefore pass the designer discount directly onto their clients. We hear that Barrett and Downing are two designers who are on their way up and hiring Elemental Interiors will likely save you more than they charge.

Representative Client Comments:
“I’ve been working with Megan and Sarah for over a year – it started with a bathroom renovation and then because they were such a delight for both my husband and I to work with, we kept asking them to sign on and take on additional projects (my master bedroom, then a dining nook, then my den).” “They’re amazing and imbue everything with clean lines and a great design aesthetic, and also a great feeling… Their design is filled with spiritual dimension!” “They make sure to include our personality and style in the design.” “I know they do much bigger projects (houses, offices, big apartments) than mine was. But in some ways a small space can be more challenging - how to make it comfy and still leave ‘space’.” “They really amazed me not only with the beauty of the finished apt but also how much room I had in my little pad.” “Sarah also does abstract artwork and did a beautiful painting for my apartment.” “They were like little machines organizing my closet. They used the space as efficiently as possible.”
