FR Review:
When was the last time you cleaned your drapes? Though they may be easy to ignore, dirty drapes are not only bad for your health, but also bad for the drapes themselves. Chuck Strausser, owner of New York Drapery Care, was originally in the dry cleaning business, but in 2004, opened his own firm, which strictly cleans high-end drapery and fabric blinds. At New York Drapery Care, all the work is done by hand at their facility. Strausser found that it was better not to have a crew “traipsing though people’s homes, spraying chemicals.” Instead, Strausser and his team of three will take the drapes down – being sure to fold and pack the materials properly – and transport the fabrics back to a workroom where they are cleaned with environmentally friendly chemicals made by Green Earth. Products by Green Earth contain liquid silicon, which is inert and breaks down into carbon dioxide. After the window dressings have been cleaned, New York Drapery care will reinstall and steam them onsite.

New York Drapery Care is fully insured, and Strausser is present for every pick up and delivery. The company will repair Roman shades and Hunter Douglas products that need their cords replaced, but this service is only offered on treatments that also being cleaned, not on a stand-alone basis. Price is based on square footage and can range from $120-$180 per width of fabric. The exact cost depends on the type of fabric being cleaned and sheer fabrics are less expensive than lined silk. Additionally, the firm charges more for anything longer than nine feet.

We hear that Strausser is a man of his word and is always sure to explain what his clients should expect from the cleaning. He gives everyone a written estimate upfront, which includes pricing and his observations. It usually takes seven to ten days to return cleaned curtains; however, New York Drapery Care can hold the window treatments at their facility if you are in the middle of a renovation. Cleaning your curtains might be one of the last things you think about, but when you do, New York Drapery Care is the company trusted by high-end workrooms, interior designers, realtors and individuals “who know.”
