FR Review:
Best known for its gut renovations of existing homes and apartments, this firm's work is evenly split between residential and commercial architecture. Clients say that Warren Freyer and his staff really listen to clients and actively incorporate their ideas into every design. The firm usually accepts twenty to 30 new projects each year of varying sizes and scopes. In addition to taking on numerous apartment combinations, the firm also tackles loft renovations and rooftop additions in Manhattan, where most of its residential projects take place. Sources tell us that the firm keeps detailed records and effectively manages contractors. We have also heard the staff could be a bit more patient about the design process, and understanding of the fact that not all clients have experience working with architects.

In business since 1991, Freyer Collaborative Architects is led by sole principal Warren Freyer, a graduate of the University of Illinois and Pratt. In addition to its Manhattan projects, the firm works on residences in the Hamptons and as far afield as Telluride, Colorado. With a staff of ten, including three licensed architects, this firm has the resources to take on large multimillion-dollar endeavors, but continues to take on small, challenging projects as well--even those without big-time budgets.

Recent projects include a large 4,200-square-foot loft renovation in a downtown industrial space, melding modern architecture to suit a fine collection of Far Eastern antiques and a modern, yet historically detailed 1,800-square-foot rooftop renovation and addition including a large garden and a scaling wall inside for the rock-climbing owners. The firm often charges standard fixed fees based on a projection of total construction costs.
