FR Review:
As anyone who has tried to cram a stroller into the back of a cab on Fifth Avenue during rush hour knows, Manhattan earns mixed reviews as a place to raise kids. But for every unique hassle, there's something like WeBop, an early education jazz program at Lincoln Center that earns raves from happy parents. Where else can you go to jam with your tyke in the same venue Wynton Marsalis plays? The program (open to children aged eight months to five years, but mainly recommended for three-to-fivers) covers a range of subjects, including learning the instruments, the creative process, and improvisation. Activities include turning classic nursery rhymes into jazz tunes, jamming with a live quartet, and learning how to improvise a solo. There's a solid amount of education, but a solid amount of pure fun, parents report. The price, $350 for an eight-week course, is a relative bargain. For jazz-loving parents, this program is a sure bet. For the curious, there are trial classes to get a sampling.
