FR Review:
In an industry where designer lines are manufactured for the masses, Khouri Guzman Bunce Lininger brings exclusivity back to bespoke furniture. Standing firmly by a small business model with a focus on local, handcrafted production, the principals of KGBL create a line of modern seating and surfaces that cater to a high-end clientele who understand the advantages a boutique can provide. Thick slabs of glass, magenta silk, marble by the ton, and bronze inlayed into white oak are all characteristic of KGBL pieces. From the initial showroom visit to post-delivery followups,
clients realize they are in the presence of a team of specialists who will even “pick up their dry cleaning for them” if it guarantees their satisfaction and return.

KGBL is a group of designers who recognized a real need for (somewhat) affordable authenticity in the realm of home decor. Two of the principals, David Khouri and Robert Guzman, hold Masters of Architecture degrees and were originally partners in the design firm Comma. Christiaan Bunce, the B of KGBL, founded the furniture fi rm Girth Design and brings a degree in Fine Arts to the table. A former senior manager of Holly Hunt and Bulthaup, business-savvy Ford Lininger was the missing piece needed to keep their small business away from the corporate world. In 2010 the four men, along with about a dozen craftsmen, opened their 3,500-square-foot loft showroom in Chelsea’s Gallery District, representing their goal of creating not just furniture but functional art. The production of their 45-piece hand-cut, hand-tied line continues to be personally overseen by the principals in their Williamsburg factory, keeping the fi rm NY-made.

KGBL boasts a stock of Pyrex, a resilient glass originally used for telescope lenses that is no longer manufactured. Unlike many craftsmen, the team knows the difference in both appearance and integrity in using silicon bronze to create a true brass look, a step up from the copper appearance of regular bronze. Designers who are aware of these rarities and variances take their clients to KGBL because they are able to justify the steep prices with an explanation of the materials. Though consciously steering clear of “reinventing the wheel,” KGBL willingly takes on custom projects with a variable upcharge; otherwise, prices are essentially set. Since each piece is made to order, alterations of the original line in size
and color are easily accommodated. Aiming to provide a personalized experience for all clients, KGBL even pays attention to details like client location, knowing the same table that will slide from the back of a truck into an LA mansion won’t necessarily fit in the elevator of an NYC penthouse, and designs accordingly.

Representative Client Comments:
“KGBL is a true find.” “I am always thrilled to introduce their line of custom furniture to my discerning clients.” “Their flexibility in design helps me facilitate good design in my own work—and the quality is unparalleled.”
