FR Review:
Nathan Andrew blends styles and antiques (his clients are some of the most astute dealers in town) within subtly modern settings for a look that is both warm and edgy. A classic Park Ave townhouse reimagined in a downtown loft; a white stucco East Hampton estate fit for Gatsby while nodding to Albert Hadley—this designer pushes the envelope while avoiding clichés. Instead, the “very conceptual” Andrew will wow a client by flawlessly executing a continuous theme: he may take a swatch of hand-dyed matte chintz meant for one set of curtains and let its ornate shapes and colors dictate the scheme throughout the home. The result is a visual journey, where each decorative component has a precise and vital place in the project’s overall composition. Of the MTV-generation, Andrew likens the final walk-through to that of seeing a music video debut: the many prior evocations of the song’s (room’s) lyrics and melody (decor) naturally take on a new definition once combined with the scenes in the video (home). Sources say that unlike the video stars – and most divas in the trade – Andrew delivers such harmony without any ego.

A David Kleinberg protégé, Andrew now works with a close-knit team of associates—often only one per project—at his own Department of Interiors. When Andrew opened the firm in 2010, a handful of Kleinberg’s clients who were looking for more senior attention moved with him (with the veteran designer's blessing, of course). Andrew still collaborates with his mentor's former architects and vendors as well as those who've worked for Peter Marino, swapping around individuals based on the client's personality. While projects typically pop up around Manhattan and Long Island, the designer is interested in working in farther regions where styles go beyond the standard New York look.

Andrew can simply redecorate, renovate a room or two, or start from the ground up for a complete home. New projects are carefully screened: Andrew gravitates towards nouveau riche clientele who have refined tastes (often antique and art collectors) yet open minds. Moreover, it’s crucial that they’ve worked with a decorator before and anticipate Andrew doing the bulk of the work. He vets his collaborators, too, and won’t take on projects where he knows the groundwork won’t be of the best quality. A perfectionist who hates to disappoint, Andrew will stand by these precautions if only to deliver the best possible result to the client. When projects are underway his involvement is 24/7 for which a flat fee and standard mark-up are charged. More than just the brains behind the operation, Andrew is said to offer shop-worthy sketches, is the first to roll up his sleeves and tear down the walls, and even custom designs 50 percent of the project’s furnishings. While he thrives off of the challenge of bespoke homes, Andrew also relishes in the freedom of hospitality commissions, seen in his design of Chelsea’s Pounds and Ounces. The rare combination of a people-pleasing trailblazer, workaholic Nathan Andrew is worth waiting for your invite into the Department of Interiors.

Representative Client Comments:
"Nathan has the same tastes as the most famous decorators, but without the attitude and ego. He's just a very, very nice person." "A mix of classic and modern—like an updated take on classic, and always comfortable." "Nathan is so thoughtful. It's been years since he did my home but he called me just the other day to say he saw an antique at a show that he knew I'd like and helped me track it down." "The look is very whole, warm, and blended - never aggressive." "Very mindful of budget. He has expensive taste but knows how to save without compromising the vision." "Nathan captures the pizzazz, snap and gloss that is New York City but without causing a scene." "Oh yes, I recommend him to everyone. I'm an antique dealer - I know all the decorators. He's the one I go to before anyone else. He has the most knowledge of antiques and understands how to blend them within any interior better than the rest."
