FR Review:
Sotheby’s selectivity meets flea market finds at Rhinebeck Antique Emporium; with antique, auction and appraisal services all under one roof, it’s been deemed a “treasure hunter’s dream.” Decorators, collectors and browsers from all walks of life roam freely through 7,000 square feet of galleries displaying 18th century European and American pieces at (almost) every price point. Adjacent to the retail space, owner Jay Grutman is constructing an additional 5,000 square-foot structure to be used as an auction house, predictably six to nine times a year. And while certain board members of the NYC Landmark Preservation Commission rely on Grutman’s appraisals regarding precious property, those looking for the value of their more “priceless” pieces are welcomed all the same. Furthering its support of culture and the arts, the emporium also periodically serves as the grounds for special events with local musicians, performers (think: fire dancers and mediums), chefs and others looking for a place to share their talents.

Grutman grew up working in his cousin’s Manhattan-based Astor Auction Gallery. Though his own career path first led him to investment banking, he returned to what he knew (and with a business degree) and opened Rhinebeck Antique Emporium in 2011; he’s since opened two satellite spaces in Rhode Island and Florida. At the NY outlet he employs four other seasoned appraisers, including specialists in manuscripts, Hudson Valley furniture and “small objects;” a jeweler will be his next hire. Though a touch more character than some would expect from this kind of shop, the emporium’s sought-after collection and expert staff give it the perfect balance of class and inclusiveness that keep fans coming in flocks.

Representative Client Comments:
"All shoppers feel welcome and the setup isn't more appealing to one type or the other; the high end buyers enjoy the experience just as much as the average browser." "The staff is very knowledgeable and well connected in the industry - they understand value and provenance and give very honest numbers. Jay is very respectful and gentle when giving the value of something, especially if the piece isn't quite what the customer thought it was." "Jay is a very smart businessman and is very forward-thinking in terms of where his shop and the industry as a whole are headed. He has the foresight to embrace new aspects in the trade." "The space is organized, clean and provides a pleasant experience every time."
