FR Review:
References are “just thrilled” with Mary Riley Smith and her work. In New York City circles and beyond, Smith is considered among the best of the best in landscape design. She renovated and oversees the prestigious Cooper Hewitt Museum garden, which is often called the best gallery garden space on Museum Mile. Smith is known for designing gardens with four seasons of interest and incorporating a wide variety of plants, from shrubs and evergreens to exotic annuals.

Smith also includes pots, urns and trellises in her designs. While she often works in Greenwich, Bedford and the Hamptons, approximately half of her jobs are in Manhattan. Smith’s designs fall at the expensive end of the scale. She subcontracts (but oversees) all garden installation. She is happy to train her clients or their gardeners in maintenance techniques. Concerned by the number of poorly planned and underused front yards, Smith wrote The Front Garden: New Approaches to Landscape Design to suggest creative ways of making front gardens both decorative and functional. Her work has also been featured in House Beautiful.

Representative Client Comments:
“Mary made the beautiful planters that grace the front of my building.” “Fabulous work. And she has great carpenters.” “The One.”
