FR Review:
With three generations under its belt, Thorp Brothers upholds a reputation for integrity that may one day outlive the antiques it restores. Founded in 1933, the business is now run by the original owner’s grandson, Alan Thorp. With a particular fondness for Early American antiques but the capability to handle anything from Old World to Art Deco, Thorp and his four craftsmen use original techniques to restore, finish and duplicate any style. While the company has specialized in veneering, gilding, hand carving, oriental lacquering and welding (to name a few) for decades, it now offers updated services outside the shop. On top of on-site work, Thorp’s expertise qualifies him to serve as a consultant when customers head to auctions. Also added to the service list since Thorp’s appointed ownership: full-paneled room duplications and custom color matching.
Thorp emphasizes that honesty is paramount in maintaining his family’s name, and with a résumé that includes frequent commissions from high-profile architects like Peter Marino, the Thorps are clearly doing something right. Private clients appreciate that they can have museum quality if they want it, but that Thorp can also provide premium restorations on any budget. Clients have the option of storing their collections in either the 1,000- or 2,500-square-foot Bronx showroom and the company gladly takes on up to 40 pieces at once. Estimates are free, otherwise clients should expect a slight charge if they’re requesting a house call, but Thorp will provide a free loose estimate via text or email. The company will travel throughout the city and beyond, even going as far as South Carolina for the right collection.
