FR Review:
Like any master designer, Thomas Britt works with form, shape, and color, but his central preoccupation is scale. As a result, his designs often take on a tone of grandeur; Britt works in assertive statements, not understated gestures. Bold patterned floors, deep silk upholstery, pairs of tall classical mirrors, and limited use of objects are a few of the designer's trademarks. Not one to back down from a challenge, Britt will achieve a significant sense of scale "in stone or in cotton-whatever's available to him." He particularly enjoys transforming ordinary spaces into spectacular showplaces through the use of unexpected colors and eclectic groupings of artwork and furnishings. More recently there has been a restrained calm along with his trademark symmetry and oversized furnishings--Britt still makes broad gestures, but to more refined effect. Though Britt registers as "a distinctive personality who hardly thinks twice before suggesting the removal of walls or the raising of ceilings," all describe the finished rooms with wonder, delight, and a sense of wit.

Britt freely mixes reproductions with fine antiques, and will combine pieces from different geographic styles and various historical periods. Jansen side tables can appear next to Georgian side chairs, with ethnic antiques rounding out the picture. Many of the larger pieces Britt incorporates into his designs are purchased during his extensive worldwide travels. His knowledge of historical design borders on encyclopedic, but he does not feel bound to a particular period or style. Rather, he strives to achieve appropriate looks for each of his clients' homes (and they often have many)-- vibrant colors in the California desert, cool blues in Carmel, and muted beige on Park Avenue.

A native of Kansas City, Missouri, Britt studied at Parsons in New York and in Europe, and established his namesake firm in 1964. Britt has a loyal base in New York and in Kansas City, and has completed interiors worldwide. Clients say his prices are quite high, but highly recommended for those without budget constraints. ASID. Representative Client Comments:
"He marches to his own drummer. His work is interesting and spectacular." "He drives the bus." "If I won the lottery I would definitely use him." "He is neither short on imagination nor gusto." "One of the giants of interior design. His work is generally quite large-scale as well." "He developed our unique, personal statement." "He operates on another level." "Doesn't back down from big structural changes if they're key to the design." "He's still working on a big scale, but has been more restrained." "As a contractor, I must say that he is not easy to work with. But the results were dramatically impressive."
