Services & Specialties
Distinguished, classical residential architecture and interior design

FR Review:
Classic style, strong standards and a personable approach are the qualities most often used to describe Craig & Co. Headed by Joan Craig, the firm creates designs known for distinct and comely traditional detail and regularly handles Park Avenue apartments, historic townhouses and suburban country homes. Craig & Co is highly recommended by clients for a cohesive design vision that combines comfort, function and elegance. References describe the team as willing and able to accommodate clients' interests and style preferences, although the architects have been known to strongly advocate design integrity. The office is successfully offers interior design services, but also collaborate well with top decorators.

The principals previously practiced separately for over a decade, joining forces in 1995. Lichten holds a B.A. from Brown and a M.Arch. from Yale, and practiced with both Edward Larrabee Barnes and Fox & Fowle. Craig holds a B.A. from Wesleyan and a M.Arch. from Princeton. She practiced with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill as well as Buttrick, White, & Burtis. Andrew Friedman is the firm's interior design director, bringing a chic and polished focus to the firm's interiors. The firm has worked at many of the best addresses in the city and also at several of their corresponding second-home outposts: Cape Cod, Onteora, the Hamptons, Michigan, Wyoming, and the Dominican Republic.

Lichten Craig's projects usually entail substantial renovations and new construction, but the firm is also willing to undertake smaller projects. References say that the principals are readily available once the project gets going and that the support staff is helpful. The firm also receives high marks for understanding family living and working well with contractors. The practice charges standard architectural percentage rates or a fixed fee. Interior design is done on a standard hourly basis with net pricing, or on cost-plus.

Representative Client Comments:
"They inherently understand a classic updated vision, with a sense of fun balanced with a sense of propriety." "There will be dignified moldings and a historical perspective." "Kevin has a truly educated architectural point of view." "Raised the standards of the contractors and represented our interests well." "They are very precise and very meticulous, but sometimes need encouragement to move onto the next issue." "The interior design side is equally professional and skillful." "They were more disciplined on budget than we were." "Quite focused and polished." "Kevin is a delight to work with as he is both extremely capable and highly charming. Speaking many architectural languages, he knows how to get it done with precision. Furthermore, he is a total team player working extremely well with designers on behalf of the client." "We would use Kevin as a pinch hitter to fix space planning issues that designers couldn't figure out." "Kevin's modernist work is fresh and exciting as he can bring a contemporary feel to the inside of some of the oldest buildings in New York."

Alex Papachristidis: Interior Designer, New York, NY
Kevin is a delight to work with as he is both extremely capable and highly charming. Speaking many architectural languages, he knows how to get it done with precision. Furthermore, he is a total team player working extremely well with designers on behalf of the client. I am very involved with every detail and he respects that focus. Also, he is right there to fix any issues. There is a great camaraderie on projects with Kevin and his excellent team. And you know that the project will be completed successfully.

Project Description & Comments:
Kevin has handled many projects for us over the years, doing significant renovation work on both our apartment in the city and our 1893 home upstate. He not only supervised the design and construction elements with rigor, he also helped with things like figuring out a way to recreate the original owner's wallpaper pattern from scratch. He is a great communicator/listener, an excellent team player, and a superlative project manager (even though our house is two hours outside of the city, he was on top of every detail). Kevin knows how to make something both architecturally attractive and also user friendly and comfortable. Best of both worlds.

Project Description & Comments:
Kevin is in the process of doing a complete gut renovation on our Upper East Side co op. Right from the beginning he understood what we were going for, we thought about things the same way. He has a very straightforward way of doing business, and a classic design sense. Right off the bat he understood our lifestyle and knew that he we needed something that would work for a young family.

Project Description & Comments:
Kevin is a great listener, and not pushy or dogmatic at all. He was able to take what I wanted, what my husband wanted, and what worked for the space and turn it into an apartment that was beautiful, and no one felt that they had gotten the short end of the stick. So often, too many chefs can spoil the soup, but Kevin was a master of figuring out a way to collaborate with everyone. He's also a fantastic creative problem solver, we would use him as a pinch hitter to fix space planning issues that designers couldn't figure out.
