FR Review:
Kevin Lichten is one of a small handful of NYC architects who have reached classical-stardom status. His designs go well beyond meeting the test of time: they are instantaneous, multi-generational, life-enhancing gifts to those lucky enough to reside within their walls. He takes inspiration from years of summering in England, finding joy in strong Palladian lines bent to surrender to just-enough eccentricity and whimsy, never more. Elongated Grecian flutes may diverge to oversized Corinthian volutes, but never a Bauhaus capital. That is not to say that Lichten does not also fare well in the modern world, but it is better off Moderne.
Lichten has an amazing ability to recall and appropriately employ his encyclopedic array of fine art and architectural details. Just being with him is a valuable lesson in historic architectural reflection. With a fine arts degree from Brown and an MArch from Yale, and years at Edward Larrabee Barnes and Fox & Fowle, Lichten is imbued with the finest architectural pedigree. Happily, he is also quite practical, both in budget and implementation, after decades of successfully dealing with exacting clientele. While some of the work is arcing toward institutional greatness, the vast majority of the payload is fine residential. No doorknob is too small for Lichten’s careful consideration, with the partnership of his two respected colleagues Andrew Friedman (previously Thierry Dupont, Eric Smith, and more) and Marita Alfonso (Issac Mizrahi).
Budgets are surprisingly fair with lots of material choices. The practice charges standard to a bit-under-standard architectural percentage rate or a fixed fee. They have collaborated with internationally-famed interior designers such as Nina Campbell, Celerie Kemble, and Katie Ridder, and also adroitly do interior design on a standard hourly basis with net pricing, or on cost-plus. Clients are lifelong advocates. Coming back to the firm for the next house or 25 years later for the next generation.
Representative Client Comments:
“While better known for larger projects, including serious church and club assignments, Kevin was totally available for our wonderful classic-six makeover.” “The support staff is also very helpful.” “High marks for completely understanding and designing to normal family living.” “Strongly helpful when it came time to negotiate with the contractor on the punch list.” “Can be very focused on getting the historical perspective in order.” "Kevin's modernist work is fresh bringing a contemporary feel to the interiors of some of the oldest buildings in New York, yet still respectful to heritage." "Brings the work to a higher plane, while also making it a joyful process."
