FR Review:
With more than a nod to the mid-century masters, Daniel Romualdez has made his mark among New York's architectural, social and fashion glitterati. Romualdez has that special "je ne sais quoi" that strikes a perfect balance between the high and the humble. Juxtaposition is a favorite entreat with an esteemed gilt Louis XV chair set upon a rush rug and scrubbed pine floor. Homes may be classically-imbued with shingle, but the moldings are of a lighter and fairer scale. Whether modern or classical, the open spaces have clear contextual references. The results are stunning, comfortable and inviting. Romualdez is regarded as a charming, polished man who takes a calm, thoughtful and engaging approach to his work.

Romualdez, the son of a Filipino diplomat, was born in Manila and raised to become a banker. After graduating from Yale and Columbia (M.Arch), he worked for the renowned Thierry Despont, then for Robert Stern for five years before founding his own practice in 1993. One of his first projects was the quick transformation of a bleak ranch house in eastern Long Island into a dreamy getaway, which was picked up by all the shelter magazines and launched his career. There is a staff of twenty that works mainly on very high-end residential projects. They become part of the fabric of their clients' lives, like a family doctor on house call, but for an indisposed lampshades or disideratum for a fantastic new country home. Most of the time the firm provides interiors to their architecture, and is said to be particularly adept at enhancing clients' rotating art collections.

Clients have included Matt and Annette Lauder, Marina Rust, Tory Burch, Diane von Furstenberg, fantasy jeweler James de Givenchy and the NYT's architecture critic Paul Goldberger. All this expertise comes at an equally lofty cost, but is within the standard range for this quality of work and clients say it's well worth it. Elle Decor A-List. AD 100 2012, 2014. AD 100 2018.
