FR Review:
Mixing the classically enduring and beautifully erudite with excessive fun is Eric Cohler’s modus operandi. Known for realizing his clients’ visions with a dedicated interest and an edge toward the future, Cohler is said to have their view at heart. With a confident countenance, this designer deftly composes the fine and the found, the traditional and the modern. Appreciated for his architectural inventiveness as well as his design skills, Cohler effectively works with clients’ architects from a project’s inception, adding significant architectural enhancements.

Clients laud Cohler for his helpful, reliable and diplomatic nature, saying that he quickly understands their intentions. Cohler’s training includes a BA in Art History and an MS in Historic Preservation And Design from Columbia University. He currently fields a staff of twelve, including a senior managing director–Tony Klein–but clients note that Cohler himself remains very accessible.

The firm works with a low upfront design fee and a reasonable markup over net for products. Alternatively, it can work on an hourly fee basis when shopping for products. Standard oversight fees are charged on a percentage basis. Cohler gravitates to the best quality the budget will allow, but he is perfectly willing to mix his aesthetic with a client's existing furniture. Known as Mr. Answerman, Cohler has wide-ranging resources and can accommodate many budget levels, remaining value conscious whatever the price. He has several fabric, furniture and hardware lines through Lee Jofa, Visual Comfort, Chesney and Stark (some have become modern classics–Cohler’s fabric designs can be seen in the White House family dining room, as selected by Michelle Obama). Professional, businesslike and generous, Cohler has an excellent reputation with past clients, who frequently ask him back. Elle De´cor A-List. KB 1994, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2006, 2007.

Representative Client Comments:
“Eric is so easy, quick and has so much range. He is as good with his left brain as his right—creative and yet so practical.” “When my architect and I were perplexed as to how to treat the walls adjoining the three floors in our apartment, Eric envisioned the solution with just one look.” “Eric willingly and lovingly helped design our Christmas decorations last year and never asked for a fee. He did the same for my friend’s Rosh Hashanah dinner.” “Refined, immaculate and sincere.” “He could even make items purchased at Ethan Allen sing on Park Avenue.” “Eric has an encyclopedic knowledge of furniture, antiques, fine art and what’s happening on the Upper East Side. He’s a fantastic designer and a great conversationalist.” “A master of design, but blueprints are not his forte.” “Eric is my insurance policy because I know everything he suggests will be correct.” “There is no question that Eric’s decoration was the reason I was able to sell my house so quickly and profitably.”
