FR Review:
Joan Blutter and Janet Shiff are known for their thoughtful and timeless designs, their strong collaboration with clients and their professional work habits. This mother-and-daughter team can do English country and American contemporary with equal ability, often adding architectural personality to their interiors with useful built-ins. Clients remark that another strength of the firm is its understanding and creative adaptation to family lifestyle patterns.
Blutter began the firm in the 1950s and has been a mainstay of the national and regional ASID throughout her career. Shiff studied art history as an undergraduate, attended the University of Wisconsin and the Harrington Institute and joined Blutter in the 1970s. Their office has been located in the Merchandise Mart for over 35 years. There are five people at the firm, which handles over 50 active projects a year. About half of the Chicago-area work is in the city and the other half is in the northern and western suburbs, often with repeat customers. Other projects have included a range of second and vacation homes in Naples, Boca, Palm Springs, Aspen and Vail. The firm is always interested in new projects and will start with just a few rooms.
Blutter Shiff will work on a hourly consultation basis or on a project basis, which includes hourly fees for design work (not for shopping or administration) and a standard hourly fee. A typical living room is in the $50,000 to $75,000 range, and clients report that the firm stays within budget by offering a range of economic choices.
