FR Review:
Clients interested in "museum-quality work"seek out Craig Deller's conservation skills and praise his helpful nature and cautious approach to the objects he conserves. Deller studied conservation at the Smithsonian Institution and is on the faculty of the Masters in Historic Preservation Program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. As a Professional Associate member of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works, he is bound by its conservation guidelines and code of ethics.

Deller and his partner Wendy Leeds specialize in the preservation and conservation of historic furniture and objects and have a particular interest in the identification and treatment of early plant-resin coatings and historically important coatings, including original surface recoveries. Much of their work involves the de-restoration of inaccurate refinishings and repairs, resulting in a more visually appropriate surface. The firm's clientele includes museums and private clients, and most of the work is done in its 5,000-square-foot lab. Examinations and Condition Reports are not free, but if the object is brought to the lab, the first half-hour of consultation is free. The firm charges an hourly rate.

Deller has made a name for himself, as confirmed by appearances on such television programs as "The Antiques Roadshow"and "At the Auction with Leslie Hindman"and mention in numerous magazine and newspaper articles. His client roster includes the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, the Chicago Historical Society, Sotheby's and the Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum.

Representative Client Comments:
"Non-invasive, with a great deal of concern for the integrity of the object.""Excellent at marquetry and French polishes.""He's very detail-oriented and conservation-minded.""It depends on the job, but for most conservation work he's great.”
