FR Review:
Frederick Phillips, FAIA, is known by clients for highly intelligent contemporary design that is appealing to a wide range of tastes. Phillips applied his skills to a collection of homes known as Prairie Crossing, located about an hour's drive north of the city. Phillips holds six distinguished building awards from the Chicago chapter of the American Institute of Architects along with three "Record Houses"awards from Architectural Record. We hear that Phillips has a keen ability to define and solve unusual architectural puzzles with creative and appropriate alternatives.
Phillips received his B.A. from Lake Forest College and earned his M.A. in architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to opening his own practice in 1976, Phillips was an architect on staff at Harry Weese and Associates (see review). Approximately half of Phillips' projects are residential, split equally between the city and the suburbs. Of its residential work, about half is new construction and half substantial renovations and additions, although, on occasion, the firm will take on a smaller project.
Phillips generally charges hourly rates with a fee cap based on a percentage of construction. Percentages tend to be higher on smaller projects, and some say the firm's fees tend to be somewhat higher in general.
Representative Client Comments:
"I'm convinced he's the finest I could have found." "His creative abilities and use of light and space are tremendous." "A thoughtful and imaginative solution to a complex design problem."
