"Michelangelo of mosaics,"Stewart Ritwo, owner and artist in residence, helps Lodestar Statements In Stone live up to its reputation. Since he opened his New York showroom in 1986, Ritwo has been dazzling the world's most discriminating residential and commercial clients with his designs. He and his select staff of artisans practice the centuries-old art of Byzantine and Florentine mosaic work, using a technique of composite patterning. What distinguishes Lodestar from other masters of mosaics, however, is Ritwo's incorporation of inlays of semi-precious stones, such as onyx, malachite, sodalite and quartzite. The designs include floor medallions, wall murals and tops for vanities and other surfaces.
Lodestar's commissions are found in some of the world's most elegant hotels, restaurants and residences. Designers say a visit to the New York showroom and gallery is worth the trip. Surprisingly, a typical Lodestar piece is completed within eight to twelve weeks. Prices are based on three variables: the stones that are used, the intricacy of the design and the size of the panel. While Lodestar's work is not within everyone's budget, many clients who've seen this star have been known to stretch.
