FR Review:
Nearly all of Cane & Basket's business is devoted to restoring aging chairs to their former glory. But current owner Bill Fimpler does occasionally cane new chairs for small manufacturers and has worked on as many as 40 pieces for a single showroom. The shop is busy, handling up to 150 jobs per month. All work, including wicker repair and rush seating, is done on-site in Cane & Basket's workshop/store by the company's nine employees.
Cane & Basket has been in business since 1934, with Fimpler at the helm. Fimpler learned the basics of furniture from his father, but sources tell us he also takes a highly intellectual approach to his subject. Fimpler has read a tremendous amount about caning, as his shop's many books make clear.
Fimpler works closely with some designers, but pricing is the same for the trade and the public. Fimpler gives free estimates based on a self-devised pricing chart. Although caning is known to be very labor-intensive, Fimpler keeps his fees manageable and serves everyone "from Venice Beach to Beverly Hills."
Representative Client Comments:
"I can't imagine that the work he does was actually done by hand—it's so intricate." "I'm glad there's someone out there like him to do this stuff, because there's no way I could begin to figure it out." "He's a character, no doubt about it."
