FR Review:
Amanda Nisbet creates interiors that are stylish, upbeat and graced with a feminine touch. Clients (who usually become friends) admire her ability to create homes that are unique yet livable, even for an active family. Variation is key to Nisbet’s method. She prefers not to use the same pattern or fabric twice, and prides herself on delivering something unique to each client. This approach can raise costs, but it yields delightful results, like a plexiglass dining table that doubles up for ping pong on rainy days.
Nisbet has a B.A. in art history from Middlebury College and a stint at Christie’s under her belt, but beyond that, interior design is in her genes; her grandmother, mother and sister have all been in the profession. Spurred on by encouraging offers, she started her firm in 1998, working on large, upscale projects right away. Clients are drawn to Nisbet’s charm, easy laughter and down-to-earth personality. They note that while she “has a sense of humor,” she “takes serious pride in a job well done.”
Shifting the pricing structure to avoid costly surprises, Nisbet charges a higher upfront design fee (which includes a detailed plan and proposal) and a standard markup over wholesale. She prefers to take on complete projects, but Nisbet will design a single room if the space provides a creative challenge. Recently, she has released a fabric line through Holland & Sherry, a lighting collection through The Urban Electric Company and a collection of rugs through Studio Four. Clients, either on Park Avenue or abroad, roundly praise her skills and her spirit, saying “it’s totally collaborative and you get a beautiful result.”
