FR Review:
Joseph Giovannini's playful, abstract architecture appeals to patrons who appreciate innovative, experimental design and are interested in how architecture can be both an art form and an inscrutable habitat. In his trademark style widely known to be "intensely modern," intellectual and spare, planes intersect randomly and frequently, creating self-conflicting corners. Equally angular free-standing furniture adds to the fun and the illusion of non-gravitational pull.
Giovannini established the firm in 1988 after receiving an English literature degree from Yale, a French literature degree from the Sorbonne and a master's in architecture from Harvard. Throughout his career, the multi-talented Giovannini was also the architecture critic for New York Magazine, an editor-at-large for Architecture Magazine and a frequent contributor to Architectural Digest. He has taught at UCLA, USC, Harvard and Columbia.
With practices in Los Angeles and New York, Giovannini has a Manhattanite's "respect for inches," maximizing any available space by creating loft-like areas. He takes on about five new projects annually, with at least half in LA. Much of the firm's work is residential, appearing on tricky hillsides or adaptive-use industrial sites in Santa Monica, Venice, Pasadena, Italy, Washington DC and New York. Gut renovations are tackled with gusto and some ground-up single-family homes are created, all on quite palatable budgets. The firm charges standard fees based upon a percentage of overall construction.
Representative Client Comments:
"These are not mere architecture projects but intellectual journeys." "Well-liked by peers and clients." "He needs clients who are interested in how architecture can expand their lives."
