FR Review:
Admired and highly recommended by clients and peers, Marmol Radziner builds elegant contemporary structures that resound with simplicity and utter youthful exuberance. For inspiration, the partners look to modernist architecture overseas, and to the local site's landscape dimensions. Designs are built upon organized proportions, the warmth of natural materials and the maximization of natural light. What sets this firm apart is its creativity in combination with its "down-to-earth attitude" and its eminently buildable designs—they make sure the blueprints work, as they build most of them. As one of the few design/build firms in the country led by architects, we're told Marmol Radziner creates a streamlined process from the first drawing to the last punch-list item, and furthermore, "you feel as if you are working with a design boutique."

Principals of the firm are Leo Marmol, who holds an undergraduate architecture degree from Cal Poly/San Luis Obispo, and Ron Radziner, who holds a BA in science from San Luis Obispo and an M.Arch. from Colorado. Established in 1989, the firm is quite the behemoth, consisting of 135 staffers, about one half designers and the other half builders and craftsmen. Rising beyond the call of duty, much pro bono time and energy is devoted to improving upon LA's urban sprawl with local community organizations.

Most of Marmol Radziner residential projects take place in the greater Los Angeles area, in neighborhoods like Beverly Hills, Bel Air and Santa Monica, though the firm has built homes in London and Paris. More recently, they opened an office on York Street in San Francisco. Marmol Radziner takes on historic restorations of modern homes (Neutra, Schindler), extensive renovations and large ground-up residences from 2,000 square foot case studies to 25,000 square foot mansions, with 3,000 to 5,000 more typical. Clients include the likes of fashion icon Tom Ford and photographer Steven Meisel. At $400 to $600 a square foot at standard fees, references say, "you're not going to get better, but remember—you're going to pay for it." AD100 2019.

Representative Client Comments:
"Their work is perfect. With most people you have to nag them and point out what's wrong, but these guys are all over it before you have a chance." "More thorough than the clients themselves—they're obsessed." "As a traditional architect, I so admire the quality. They are the first choice for modern." "They never waste your time." "Designs less about the style and more about the authenticity of California expressionism—thick plaster, divided light, wooden frames." "I've seen it all as a top celebrity LA decorator—they are incredibly responsible and so personable."
