FR Review:
Clients who want a "younger," "edgier" approach to custom residential construction often request the "deft touch" of Brian Lushing and Balcorp Construction. This firm typically takes on projects very large and very custom, aided by a reservoir of in-house craftsmen. What really sets Balcorp apart is its ability to perform carpentry, finishes, concrete, tile and even exterior stonework with its own men, who clients call "polite and highly competent." This allows for better control over the quality and pace of each and every job. Bids also prove more accurate and change orders less painful.

Established as a development company, the firm eased into building custom homes twenty years ago, and has focused exclusively on GC work since the mid-1990s. References find owner Brian Lushing, who comes from several generations of builders, "down to earth" and very involved. From pre-construction to site meetings, Lushing acts as the liaison between the client, the architects and the issues. Layers of in-house supervisors and consultants lend support. While Balcorp's craftsmen are versed in a variety of styles, most of their work falls under traditional ground-up construction or addition within the framework of original architecture. The firm zeroes in on the zone between Beverly Hills and Malibu.

Clients say they'd "recommend many times over" the "phenomenal experience" of working with Balcorp. Lushing is especially praised for his friendly manner: "It's like having your friend build your house," one source says. "He treats it like he'll be back to sit across the dinner table." The firm takes on seven to eight projects at a time, ranging from a $1 million, 3,000 square foot office and guesthouse addition to a $9 million expansion of an 18,000 square foot residence. While generally more expensive than most, Balcorp's in-house talent gives it a pricing edge on larger jobs versus LA's contracting moguls.

Representative Client Comments:
"Coherent and realistic cost estimates." "I've walked into other homes that cost twice as much where the quality is not half as good." "Brian knows what's needed in certain renovations and how to get the vintage feel of things." "Big in his own right." "Brian was the reason it went so smoothly. With his guidance we put together the team." "Brian was there for us when the architect and decorator fought over turf." "Genuinely cares on a personal level." "We leave Brian's number with the person who house-sits." "Information was clear, easy to understand. He was always on target or close to it. No huge surprises." "Very friendly and open to suggestion. There's no ego to work past. He makes it comfortable."
