FR Review:
Acclaimed for their innovative designs for difficult sites–waterfront in particular–the architects of Austin Patterson Disston are well versed in the historical roots of Revival and Shingle styles and the streamlined simplicity of contemporary homes, and maintain a sensitivity to scale and detail no matter what the language. Insiders say the "quirky and really clever" David Austin is a wealth of knowledge with a refreshing sense of humor. And forget about trying to find one of the partners relaxing in a posh corner office; sources tell us they are in the "design trenches" with the rest of this 30-person staff, constantly exchanging ideas in a fluid environment. Clients say the genuine enthusiasm of this firm's collaborative approach makes it one of the most sought-after firms in the area.

After training with Philip Johnson, Austin started the firm in 1963, later partnering with McKee Patterson and Stuart Disston. Disston is now the managing architect. Clients say the firm's impeccable attention to detail is second only to its superior client relations. "You don't buy a product with them," we're told, "what you buy is a solution to a unique design challenge."

In 2000, the firm opened a second office in Quogue, serving the Hamptons, in addition to the Fairfield CT location. Handling about 30 projects with budgets ranging from $400,000 to $10 million at any given time, Austin Patterson Disston designs mostly large residential projects in Connecticut, Eastern Long Island and in and around the city. The firm bills on standard hourly, fixed or percentage-based fees.

Representative Client Comments:
"In about an hour and a half, they came up with some drawings. Four weeks later, they were still perfect. We never changed a single thing." "They're definitely creative, but they don't put you into something that's too far out." "A great outfit to deal with, and no attitudes either, thank God." "They could have built some dopey ranch for me, but they came up with a beautiful carriage house." "It was expensive, but we knew that going in and there were no surprises."
