FR Review:
Henry G. Gardiner has accrued a lifetime of experience working in the museum world, so it's not surprising that he is frequently recommended for appraisals on museum quality work. "Paintings, prints, and drawings" are his forte, mostly from the 19th and 20th century, though according to references he is accomplished enough to tackle almost anything sent his way. Between a stint teaching at the University of Southern California, a museum directorship at the San Diego Museum of Art, and significant projects at high caliber museums across the country, his CV reflects an academically rigorous approach to appraisal. He is especially diligent, references note, on issues of provenance, as much of his work for museums involved tracking a painting's history through several generations of ownership. Though Gardiner brings a high caliber of experience to his work, sources stress that he is often willing to appraise a range of items (in his own words: "I've done everything from $5 appraisals on up"). His appraisals can be geared towards a variety of purposes, most often charitable donation value and estate planning. His fee, sources say, is not the cheapest in the field but it well reflects his considerable expertise.
Representative Client Comments:
"A rare find." "From the old school of appraisers. He's been around the block a few times and seen it all." "Taking fewer jobs, paring down his commitments." "He's not afraid to express his opinion, even if its not what the client wants to hear." "His expertise is unquestioned."
