FR Review:
With over 100 offices around the world, hundreds of employees, and a grand headquarters in New York, Sotheby's is one of the largest auction houses in the world (founded in 1744, it is also one of the oldest). The office in Palm Beach is small by comparison, and it exists mainly to provide simple on-location service to South Floridians. Appraisal is often handled via email and digital pictures by out-of-state experts (who sometimes fly in, if the situation demands it).

The firm's moderate fees are based on the volume and nature of the property, as well as the time and the number of specialists involved in the appraisal. If the appraised property is consigned to Sotheby's for sale within one year of the appraisal, a prorated portion of the fee is refunded. For larger estates and collections, fees for written evaluations are negotiable and are generally very competitive. Though the auction-driven nature of Sotheby's means you might be "shuffled off to Buffalo" if you're not bringing in an expensive collection, the firm's "professionalism" and "expertise" are appreciated by many satisfied clients.

Representative Client Comments:
"The appraisal process was quite clear." "They're not going to give you too much attention if you just come in with Aunt Millie's pearls." "True expertise, not just amateurs with fancy fake titles."
