FR Review:
In a business synonymous with headaches and heartbreak, this firm provides its patrons with an “extraordinary client-focused service” the likes of which ensures peace, tranquility and “gorgeous results.” Since 1992, Zen Restoration has successfully absorbed and incorporated nearly all of the major trades—from millwork, electrical and plumbing to painting, tile and marble installation—and now maintains them in-house, minimizing dissonance and providing greater control and efficiency throughout the renovation process. It doesn’t hurt that this also helps keep costs down and conserve time. We hear that company principal Bernard Sobus, and his crew are “top-notch professionals” who treat each project like they are working on their own homes, with the utmost courtesy, respect and attention to detail. Communication between clients, crews and Sobus himself are said to be “seamless,” allowing any adjustments or changes to be made without any noticeable disruption in the work flow.

Clients and colleagues alike effuse about Sobus’ ability to not only harmonize more than 200 craftsmen spread among ten major projects at a time, but also keep them on time and on budget. Zen’s pièce de résistance is their custom millwork and furniture, which are designed, fabricated and finished “by true artisan wood craftsmen” in their 40,000-square-foot shop. The firm almost exclusively works in New York’s five boroughs, with projects ranging anywhere from $500,000 to upwards of $25 million at their grandest and most opulent. Blue chip designers and architects agree that the firm can execute a range of styles, from more layered traditional to streamlined contemporary. A testament to its capabilities, Zen was the general contractor behind Peter Pennoyer Architects’ 2014 Stanford White Award-winning Greenwich Village townhouse renovation. If you are looking to have a smaller job or single room done, this won’t be the firm for you, but those lucky enough to retain Zen’s services clients rave that the level of quality you get at the price point Zen offers will give you “inner peace.”

Representative Client Comments:
“Zen always provided extraordinary service and impeccable workmanship.” “Their craftsmanship was of the highest caliber, their employees were courteous, hard-working, punctual and pleasant in every respect.” “Excellent shop drawings and cabinetwork.” “An excellent all-round package. Good project management and quality construction at a price point that seems moderate compared to its peers.” “Came in exactly on budget and in the time frame discussed.” “The value of using Zen is most evident in my last two clients ecstatic satisfaction with their services.”

The firm is incredible, the quality of work and ability to work with unforeseen circumstances is excellent. Responsive and fair in dealing with unexpected circumstances and the finished work is impeccable. As good as the best but priced more realistically

Project Description & Comments:
The craftsmanship that Zen Restoration produces is far superior to all other contractors I have worked with. Their work is neat as a pin. They are extraordinary at reacting to and solving field conditions, are innovative as demonstrated by the custom parts they will fabricate to get just the right solution for their clients. They value and respect the Owner / clients, as well as the architects and designers they work with. I highly recommend them for any type of project, but they really shine on high-end residential projects. Even though their work is high end and involves expensive finishes, I think they provide pricing that is an outstanding value. I can say that I think the clients are able to get a much higher end project for the price, then they would get from another construction firm, for the same costs or less. I can't wait till I join them on another project! Sincerely, Stuart Garber, Architect, AIA NCARB.
