Company Philosophy
Steven Harris Architects is an award winning design firm with extensive and varied experience in both public and private commissions. Predominantly staffed by Mr. Harris’s former students from Yale University, the office takes a collaborative approach to design, fostering an open exchange of ideas both within the firm and with clients. Since the design process is tailored individually to the client’s program, context, and site, each of the firm’s projects takes on a unique character and appearance.
Areas of Expertise / Recent Projects
Dubbed the ‘guru’ and ‘authority in townhouse design’ by Architectural Digest, Steven Harris Architects draws upon a depth of knowledge and working experience in high end residential design. With over 70 townhouses and numerous apartments completed in New York during the past 25 years, the firm has considerable skill and a particular fondness for exploring the architectural potential of urban houses and contemporary family life.

Each design emerges from a process of constant refinement and dialogue with clients, from initial inquiry to well beyond occupancy. Renowned for impeccably crafted and expertly managed projects, the firm is particularly adept at navigating the bureaucratically complex approvals process of cooperative boards, the New York City Department of Buildings and the Landmarks Preservation Commission.

Past and current projects include the rehabilitation of a six-story townhouse adjacent to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the design of a new luxury residential building on Bond Street. The firm’s work has received numerous AIA and Interior Design Best of Year awards, and Harris and the firm are recognized in Architectural Digest’s AD 100, Elle Décor’s A-List, and the Interior Design Hall of Fame.
