FR Review:
Appropriate scale, harmony of light and crystalline placement are the trademarks of Matthew Smyth. Mixing the historically relevant with modern e´lan, rooms are streamlined with fine antiques and original thought. Recently, art has been playing a larger role in his work, with colors, lighting and even furniture selected to highlight a showstopping piece. Architecturally, his design plans are said to be very clear and helpful, giving the client a visual basis for informed decision making. The firm is small, and clients note that they receive Smyth’s full attention. They also note that his follow-through is a crucial strength, saying “the delivery is as good as the design.”

After studying at FIT and spending five years with noted classicist David Easton, Smyth started his own firm in 1987–he has been developing his own distinctive voice ever since. Most of his work is in Manhattan, although clients can be found worldwide (including Palm Springs, Palm Beach, London, Budapest, and even the occasional exotic commission in Brooklyn). He often decorates second or third residences, and many of his new customers are family referrals. Most work is residential, but he has done a few boutique hotels in recent years. Smyth spends time regularly in Paris (he has an apartment there), adding a Continental inspira- tion to his lines.

Smyth charges a standard design fee and a reasonable markup on product. Living rooms are in the $75,000 range. All bills include the net costs. While he personally tends toward the modern, clients report that he is successful with any style—including highly traditional—or with a dextrous blend. Elle Decor A-List.
