FR Review:
Lien Luu offers an eclectic take on modern classics. This up-and-coming designer enjoys mixing different styles and finds pieces that she appreciates from every period. Clients find Luu’s versatility to be one of her most distinctive features as a designer. A serene color palette characterizes her work, and she often juxtaposes smooth and textured materials. Luu loves details and accessories; we hear that it’s the little things that make her designs work.
In college, Luu studied to be a software engineer, but after four years in that industry, she found herself unhappy with her lack of creative outlet. She left her job to study in San Diego, and in 1991, she received her BFA in interior design. A few years later, she moved to New York and worked for the notable designers Stephen Sills, Naomi Leff and David Easton. In 2005, she opened her own firm and her career has been gaining momentum ever since. The company is made up of Luu and her design assistant, who does AutoCAD and drawings of custom furniture. Luu solely does residential work, and most of her projects involve fixtures and furnishings–only a quarter of them are gut renovations. She keeps the personal touch by only taking on two to three projects at once, with equal attention given to single-family homes and to apartments. She has done work in Chicago, Anguilla, Southampton, Carmel and New York City.
Luu charges a standard markup over net and a design fee. Clients report that part of Luu’s charm is her great personality; she is very honest and has a quirky sense of humor. Granted, her designs are not avant-garde earthshakers, but there’s something for everyone in Luu’s work, and she is a solid bet for anyone who wants an elegant, traditional home.
