FR Review:
Nikolai Katz looks at each project as a space that has a unique story to tell. Avoiding clichés, he conjures structures that are their own entity, only to be elevated with design and décor (he also does custom furniture and millwork). Concrete floors, lots of glass, pops of color among clean white lines—Katz will go industrial modern given full range. But he can adapt his modernism to any style, even Hollywood regency or Victorian. Clients hire him because they sense his artistic capabilities, then fall in love with him when they realize the prestige of his work comes without ego. It’s been reported that Katz will happily lead the entire project or simply provide the drawings—whatever is needed of him. Sources go on about Katz’s patience, easy-going manner and dedication to the client.

Katz received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Chicago then moved to Paris with the intent to study art ,particularly sculpting, after working as Richard Serra's assistant. Inspired by the historic city, his focus quickly turned to architecture. More than just a second thought, Katz’s skills in the field landed him a job with renowned designer Andrée Putman. From there he worked in New York City alongside the likes of I. M. Pei, building both the resume and confidence to apply to be Estee Lauder’s new architect. He was awarded the position and still lists the company’s store in the GUM Shopping Center in Moscow as his proudest project. Katz received his architecture license in 1996 and opened his 4-person firm in 1998.

The only limitations Katz sees are time and money, and he caters his creativity to each. All appreciate that he “really knows how to manage expenses” and treats every client “like they’re paying top dollar.” Katz will visit prospective subcontractors in their shops, checking up on the quality of their work and making sure their schedules are open enough to give the project proper attention. He doesn’t upcharge on materials and won’t allow others on the job site to do so either. His fixed deposit is followed by the client’s choice of an hourly rate or percent of construction. The final bill is typically below average rates and projects range from $300,000 to $2 million. Katz is LEED certified and a member of the AIA.

Representative Client Comments:
“The original apartment had holes in the walls and ceilings and smelled from the rotting pipes. A subcontractor on the job performed some unethical, borderline illegal work. Nikolai took the reigns, brought in honest, high-quality subcontractors, reworked the whole project, and saved me hundreds of thousands of dollars.” “With him there’s no excuses or bailout when a challenge arises.” “He’s more than willing to go the extra mile.” “No attitude, no ego. He’ll take your suggestions and start from scratch if it’s not right.” “He’s exceptional about catering to the needs of the client, both in terms of function and aesthetic. It’s his main concern.” “I thank God every day for Nikolai.” “Cheap prices but not cheap work. He definitely undercharges because the quality is unbelievable.” “He’s looking to heal you and give you a home, not watch you suffer for your money.” “I gave Nikolai my lifelong savings and he gave me my lifelong dream home. I’m not moving, ever.”

Project Description & Comments:
We found him to have the utmost character, inspired creativity, easy manner, and considerate mannerism. Nikolai is trustworthy, dependable, and honest. In our case, he dealt with European Union and Irish regulators and general contractors in getting approved a project no local European thought possible. His pricing was fair, given the scope. We highly recommend him and would be willing to talk with anyone about his work with us.
