FR Review:
As a leading practitioner of transitional style, Alan Tanksley’s subtle but radiant color palettes frame livable spaces that are organic, not precious. Square edges are a common theme as well as rich, textured fabrics and woods. Tanksley says that correct scale and proportion inform his design. His rooms have a painterly sense of balance and composition, and his expertise as a colorist further reflects an artistic sensibility. In Tanksley’s interiors, one often sees muted or natural shades with a pop of bright color here and there. Clients report that his office, with its soothing hues, nineteenth century fixtures and abundance of natural light exemplifies his style quite well. Tanksley’s clientele is very devoted, and he has done up to seven projects for a single client.
Before starting his own firm in 1993, Tanksley was an associate at Mark Hampton Interior Design. Alan Tanksley Inc. has six employees on staff, and Tanksley is involved in every project. His longstanding professional relationship with famed architects Maya Lin, Robert Orr and James Dayton is a bonus for architectural renovations. Tanksley charges a retainer fee that may be returned upon completion of the project in addition to a high hourly and average markup over net costs. His designs usually only contain custom new pieces and vintage/antique pieces, which is a costly, but special feature of his interiors. Alan Tanksley’s designs exemplify restrained opulence, and his clients keep coming back for more.
Representative Client Comments:
"A respected professional in his field." "He excels at using warm and luminous color." "His interiors are contemporary, but not in a cold way. Very inviting."
