Acclaimed for bringing the outdoors indoors, Dean Larkin achiever symbiosis between his buildings and the landscape. Self-described as “fanatical about natural lighting,” Larkin achieves this effect through the use of walls of glass and the sprinkling of overhead skylights. He even does complex lighting analysis to ensure that his highly modern and sleek buildings only require natural light during the day. His contemporary style seems to attract a younger clientele.
An LA native, Larkin received his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Southern California and is also a member of the American Institute of Architects. After receiving his degree, Larkin worked at Landry Group. In 1999, he went on to establish his own firm with a team of six people. Larkin has an obsessive management style that entails being onsite all the time. He is also the only designer at the firm. Project managers interact with the clients and the job captain’s draft and deal with the “nuts and bolts” of production. Larkin usually takes on ten to fourteen projects at a time, half of which are residential. Either by choice or demand, Larkin seems well versed in contemporary and modern styles but less experienced in traditional design. He has done homes in Beverly Hills, Malibu, Venice Beach and the Hollywood Hills, mostly in the six to seven thousand square foot ranges. The firm has also completed several high profile projects including the Vivienne Westwood flagship store in LA and a full rebuild of a home by influential California architect Harry Gesner.
We hear that Larkin is “obsessive about budget.” He handles all the bidding, standardizes the bid, and invoices clients twice a month. He charges a fixed fee of fifteen to twenty dollars per square foot and a low hourly for revisions.
