FR Review:
Not one to stand on the sidelines and order subcontractors around imperiously, Mary Van Vliet of MaryOlive Design LLC rolls her sleeves up and gets involved. Treating her own rambling Victorian as a laboratory of sorts, she constantly tinkers with it to generate ideas for outside projects. A big proponent of Green design, Van Vliet's brand of environmentalism isn't rooted in expensive high-tech materials but rather a cozy sense of thrift: why not sew a new slipcover for that treasured (if frayed) couch rather than tossing it into a landfill and spending thousands on a new one? Though she collaborates with clients on design, Van Vliet always brings a sense of warmth and comfort livened up by a compelling sense of color. With a work history that includes time as a fine artist, decorative painter, and textile designer, she has a natural sense for strong hues and intriguing patterns.
Founded in 1995, MaryOlive Design LLC is a one-woman shop, meaning that Van Vliet is personally accountable for every step of the process. Though she can read floorplans and is handy with a hammer, she focuses on the decorative aspects of a project and does not take on contracting or architectural duties. Van Vliet keeps her roster of clients small and focused, split between Brooklyn and Manhattan. Rates are affordable, and given that Van Vliet is a perfectionist, clients generally get their money's worth and then some.
Representative Client Comments:
"Fun to work with, really hands-on can-do kind of person." "She really knows Brooklyn."
