FR Review:
Ken Gemes’ interior design work can be summed up in two words: understated elegance. Gemes’ goal with each project is to create a comfortable yet sophisticated living space that is tailored, clean and quiet. Ken believes that people respond to their environment, especially the colors in a room and the way it is lit, so he places great importance on these two aspects of interior design. Avert to anything overwhelming, Ken tries to create soothing and peaceful environments. The rooms in any home by Ken Gemes have a consistency and flow to them, as he focuses on using certain colors to transition from room to room. For clients with families he aims to create kid-friendly spaces devoid of clutter, fluff or ‘trappings of grandness’ as he put it. With only three people in his employment who mostly do behind-the scenes work, Ken is fully committed to every aspect of every project, giving clients a consistent and personal service.
Gemes got his start in interior design after spending years in the retail industry working on the floor plans and visual layouts of retail stores. His predilection for creating aesthetically pleasing spaces was a precursor to interior design. After spending time in Europe and India on business Ken fell in love with British Colonial furniture, which he began importing. Helping clients integrate his furniture into their homes, he eventually stopped importing and concentrated solely on interiors. Because of his background in interior planning and floor plans, Gemes will often help clients with the architectural elements of the space they are creating so the spaces he creates are harmonious architecturally and in decor from their conception.
Ken Gemes Interiors generally works on three to four projects at a time and completes eight to ten projects per year. Ken sees a lot of repeat business from clients, and has done as many as three projects for the same client, evolving styles to suit a primary residence, beach house and a rustic country getaway.
