FR Review:
Jack Wettling is not a "contemporary" architect in the strictest sense of the word, but his designs reflect his clients' modern lifestyles. Clients (many of whom work in the fashion world) seek him out for beautiful, stylish homes, but nothing too stuffy--Wettling is rarely called upon to sketch a formal dining room. Cleverly employing light, space and a carefully curated selection of natural materials, Wettling creates spaces that feel clean and classic. From a Further Lane retreat to a Park Avenue duplex, Wettling designs around each client's specific needs, leading to an elegant pragmatism where architectural flourishes work in harmony with everyday use.
Wettling began his career working for a small, prestigious residential firm, then moved on to doing large commercial projects at a corporate architecture company. Craving more creative freedom, he founded his own company in 1991 with an emphasis on residential projects. From his time in the corporate world, Wettling carried forward a sense of professionalism--clients report that their projects are always on time and on budget. His tone, however, is far from corporate. References say that Wettling has the "laid-back, easygoing" confidence of a veteran, because he knows he can get the job done and takes genuine pleasure in the process. They say Wettling's staff of seven is "helpful," "clued-in" and "clearly enjoying the work."
Wettling takes on as many as fifteen projects at a time, charging a standard markup on construction costs. The firm's fee structure is not built around cutting corners--Wettling makes estimates based on what it will cost to do a project right, then sticks to them. The company is in a position to turn work away, and is accordingly choosy about which clients to take on. Those who end up working with Wettling benefit from his perfectionism, often long after the job is done (many clients shared stories about receiving help years after the project was over). Said one, "Why would I work with anyone else? I can just sit back and let Jack take care of everything."
Representative Client Comments:
"Jack will push the design a little bit, to expose you to new ideas. The results were always incredible." "If I wanted a cookie-cutter approach, I wouldn't go to Jack." "Whenever I called his office with a question, everyone on staff knew all about my project, and was extremely helpful." "Jack pushed me to take risks, but they were calculated risks, and I was always thrilled with the result." "He doesn't settle for less than the best." "Working with him is very collaborative… he wants you to do your homework. We marked magazine after magazine. When we were ready to start on the project, everything went so smoothly as a result."
