FR Review:
Run by the Liroff family since 1906, City Knickerbocker is a lighting Mecca and a New York institution. The family has a deep knowledge of the sale, rental and repair of antique, reproduction and contemporary lighting fixtures. Everything in the store is for rent, which the local film and theater industry certainly makes use of, and they sell everything from modern floor lamps to old-timey globe lampshades. They will repair electrical work as well as broken fixtures, and can turn “pretty much anything into a lamp.” So, if you score something interesting at the flea market and you wish it were a lamp, this is the place to go.
The 10,000 square foot facility means that they can stock a plethora of styles and components, but nine-to-fivers beware: they are only open Monday through Friday and their 11th Ave location is “practically in the Hudson River,” making it difficult to “pop on over to” for drop off or pickup. Prices are recommended as “surprisingly reasonable.”
Representative Client Comments:
"These guys are a designer's secret weapon in lighting--they can fix or find anything." "They've created props for countless movies, including The Godfather and A Beautiful Mind ."
