FR Review:
Channeling Gutenberg's 15th century letterpress techniques with modern fonts and beguiling graphics, Sloane PRESS makes its distinguishing mark. More chic than raised engraving and considerably more elegant than chemically created thermography, the hard bite of letterpress down into dense paper offers a uniquely tactile and sensuous appeal. But this craft must be executed by the hands of refined master like Sloane Madureira, or the results can easily become ornamental and cloying.

Stepping into the workshop of Sloane PRESS is like entering a time warp. Before you get to the client desk strewn with innumerable comely inspirations (maps, wedding weekend guides, wood veneer party invitations), you peek into the workshop with two whirling-twirling 50-year old Heidelberg Windmill presses which are data sculptures in motion. Each piece of stationery is hand-fed into this vortex. A multiplicity of other activities are also being executed by hand including color edging, dye cutting, and ribbon binding. The shop outsources engraving which is often used in conjunction with the letterpress. The careful coordination of printing and assembly is led by co-partner and wingman, Tim Chapman.

Madureira is a true artist with a Master of Fine Arts from Pratt, and can design almost anything from icons to interlocking initials. Chapman, with a degree in Fine Art from NC State, is an expert printer. Since letterpress uses ten times the amount of pressure as engraving and it is this physical relief that creates the artistic signature of the craft, having an expert at the helm is critical. All this creative ingenuity and proficiency comes at a cost, but clients are so thrilled by the outcome that few think about the expense which is generally much less than engraving. A box of 100 custom two-ply cards and tissue-lined envelops runs about $700 and takes about 3 weeks. Also, Sloane PRESS is quite capable of expedited production and smaller runs, given the in-house flexibility of the operation.

Sloane knows how to get it just right. It is modern with a beautiful nod to the past. Also, client service is their middle name. A fabulously creative experience.

Bottom Line:
No other choice for letterpress in the city. The only designer who can do this consistently beautifully without looking overdone and Victorian.

Project Description & Comments:
Sloane is simply a genius at letterpress. She has that touch which makes her designs look classy, clean, elegant AND hand-crafted all at the same time. This is very hard to do. Other letterpress operations produce papers that are too overwrought, florid, swirly. They are stuck in the era when letterpress was first discovered (the 1440s!) or the Victorian age when it last flourished.

Sloane uses much cleaner fonts and graphics, many of which she personally creates, to keep the look modern sexy. Reminiscent of Art Deco, not Renaissance. I would not trust anyone else. Especially since this stuff is not cheap!

Project Description & Comments:
Truly a piece of art. Totally set the tone for the wedding. The invitation included all the accouterments: a map & directions, a weekend program, the rehearsal dinner invite, the main announcement, and return cards. A huge undertaking that was executed with grace and flair. We received incredible compliments. Better than the dress! Could not recommend Sloane and her team more highly.
