While there's no doubt that he has his own aesthetic—clean, colorful, modern—Andrew Mikhael is anything but intrusive. Through numerous interviews Mikhael gets to know his clients personally, then adjusts his own concepts accordingly. If a client has an expansive art collection Mikhael is able to showcase the pieces through his designs; he'll make a note of how much wall space is required for dishes and other household necessities, then let the art take center stage. Mikhael's work is about livability, functionality behind the façade and above all, telling the client's story.
Mikhael is a licensed architect in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, with a master's of architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. While traveling the world for commercial jobs and working alongside distinguished architectural and engineering firms, Mikhael had a personal side project—a piece of furniture called the Slouch Couch. Admired for its innovative combination of space and comfort, the piece was picked up by modern art galleries. A resident in New Jersey looking to renovate saw the product and insisted he have an entire home built using the couch as inspiration. The client commissioned Mikhael and so began his independent career in 2009.
Mikhael charges a flat rate including drawings and timing, and bills monthly. Clients can't get over how much they get for the price; all report Mikhael is not merely the architect but the point of contact for everyone on the project.
