FR Review:
New York's clothing cognoscenti call Bhambi's Custom Tailor a "class act" and a great bet for men's bespoke suits, shirts and dress wear, not to mention exacting alterations. The handmade garments are masterfully cut to clients' proportions, made with the highest quality fabrics and are extensively detailed (think hand-finished buttonholes and precision-matched lapel patterns). The style here is a more form-fitting European cut, but the staff can easily adjust to a roomier American fit when needed. In fact, John McCain had his entire election wardrobe made here (don't hold the outcome against Bhambi's). Pierce Brosnan and Howard Schultz are also loyal customers.
The shop hasn't let its stellar reputation go to its head: the staff is praised as "extremely pleasant" and "quick to accommodate." At the helm is the personable Harry Bhambi, who took over the family business in 2000 after studying at FIT. His father, Lal, opened the eponymous shop in 1968 and can still be found there five days a week making patterns. With approximately 14 workers on contract, Bhambi's can comfortably turn around a new suit in about five or six weeks. They are "lightning fast" when it comes to alterations though, and many of the city's finest shops direct customers to Bhambi's when their own in-house tailoring can't meet a deadline. About 65% of the firm's work is bespoke and the remaining alterations.
A major selling point is the "free alterations for life" policy on any suit made here. One client recently sent in 15 pairs of pants to be taken in and had them back within two weeks, no additional cost incurred. With suits starting at $1,800 and running to $3,500+, this is a nice bonus. Although prices are definitely high tier, clients note that suits from Bergdorf or Barney's are "more expensive than what you'd get at Bhambi's for a similar fabric and style." In fact, Barney's often recommends Bhambi's for their most complicated fittings, that are beyond the scope of in-house expertise. Men's alterations are surprisingly affordable given the quality, starting at $25 for a hem.
Representative Client Comments:
"They've been my go-to suit maker for over seven years--best tailor around." "Harry and the team excel at helping clients find the best cut for them." "The whole process, from start to finish, is incredibly easy." "A good value, given the high fabric quality and perfect fit." "I've recommended Bhambi's to at least a dozen people and they all had very positive experiences."
